Course Goal / Objective
In this course, problems and controversies in the Paleolithic of the Near East will be explained to the students, and the role of ancillary sciences in archaeology will be taught.
Course Content
After briefly characterizing the Palaeolithic of the Near East, from about 1.8 million years ago to 9700 BC, the course will address problems and controversies important for human evolution. Archeometric techniques are very helpful for claryifying these controversies. Among the topic to be discussed are isotopic evidence for changing climatic conditions, application of archeometric dating techniques, documentation of fire and fire-related industries through microstratigraphy and archeometric techniques, bone chemistry as an indicator of diet, methods for identifying the season of occupation of a settlement, and other related topics. The course will emphasize the importance of archaeometry in comtemporary Palaeolithic archaeology.
