Course Goal / Objective

This course aims to gain students the skill to absorb written, oral or visual texts beyond their surface meanings by utilizing relevant approaches and methods of analysis along with the theoretical knowledge underlying those methods and approaches. The students are also expected to be able to analyze different types of texts in the field of Communication Studies as well as developing a deeper understanding of the world around them and the skill to produce adequate texts themselves, while discovering the dynamic patterning of the text development.

Course Content

With specific focus on the dynamic nature of texts as communicative arenas, this course will mainly deal with issues, starting with the concept of textuality, generic and common features of written, oral and visual texts, various methods employed in the field of Text Analysis and underlying theories and approaches. Also included in the syllabus are the applications of the methods presented, on various texts that are of interest in the domain of Communication Studies, such as news articles, news reports, ads and political texts. Some class time will also be allocated for discussing individual term projects.
