Course Goal / Objective
The goal of this course is to introduce communication protocols used on the Internet. The outline includes a detailed study of Ethernet and CSMA/CD, IP addressing, subnetting and routing, TCP/IP suite, and some popular application layer protocols.
Course Content
OSI reference model. IEEE 802.3 Ethernet and libpcap API. IP and Subnetting. Routing. ICMP. UDP. TCP connection management. TCP retransmission timeout mechanism and flow control. TCP congestion control. Network simulation and OTcl programming. HTTP. E-Mail Protocols: SMTP, POP3, IMAP. VoIP: SIP, RTP, RTCP.
