Course Goal / Objective

The course introduces prehistoric farming and pastoralist societies in the Balkans, the Black Sea steppes, and the Caucasus. The course also examines connections between these societies and Central Asia, the rest of Europe and also Anatolia.

Course Content

The course surveys Holocene hunting-gathering societies in the Balkans and the western Eurasian steppelands. It then looks at the introduction and development of farming and herding economies in these same regions, and considers the effects of horse domestication on these economies. The course also examines the genetic, linguistic and archaeological evidence for migrations from the Pontic steppe into Anatolia, Central Asia and western Europe.
