Course Goal / Objective

The general aim of the course; In order to understand the cultural, social and artistic structure of a period, it provides an understanding of the basic terminology and forms related to the history of clothing that have emerged since the primitive cultures in the process up to the beginning of the 20th century.

Course Content

In this course; comprehend the basic terminology and forms of historical clothing, the importance of its use and historical research of clothing designs from the primitive period to the early 20th century.

LO01 Define fashion concepts (Fashion, anti-fashion, unfashionable, unisex, haute couture, etc.). Explain the role of fashion in understanding of cultural and social identity.
LO02 Can compare clothing and accessories in terms of cultural values. Explains the scope of fashion, stages of fashion process, fashion theories, fashion cycle, and fashion process.
LO03 Can relate clothes in terms of fashion, culture and personality values. Explain the role of fashion in personality development and image formation.
LO04 Explain the role of clothing and social identity formation. Defines the structural forms of clothes that have developed in the historical process.
LO05 Can relate the concept of fashion in terms of cultural interaction, sexual identity, class and status. Explain the phenomenon of visibility in fashion (pioneers are out of fashion) and make comments on the extinction of fashion.
LO06 Students will be able to define key terminology about historical clothing on both a global and local scale, from primitive cultures to the early 20th century.
LO07 Students can gather information about historical changes and developments in clothing.
LO08 Students can evaluate historical clothing from different social, critical, political and historical perspectives.
LO09 Students can identify important iconic figures, changing silhouettes, that changed the history of clothing.
LO10 Students learn about the national and folkloric elements of our own cultural dress forms.
