Course Goal / Objective

The aim of the course is to provide students with information about the working principle of internal combustion engines, engine types, comparison of real and ideal cycles and reactions related to them.

Course Content

Definition of engines, basic concepts. Engine types: Wankel, Stirling, Jet engines. Working principles with gasoline and diesel engines. Engine Fuels, Combustion, 4-stroke engines and their studies. 2-stroke engines and their studies. Ideal cycles and thermal efficiency. Comparisons of cycles. Deviations from the ideal cycle. Engine Characteristics. Actual cycle times (Suction and Compression times). Actual cycle times (Combustion-Expansion and Exhaust times). Fuel systems and mixing in gasoline engines. Fuel systems and mixing in diesel engines. Engine emissions and control techniques. Hybrid and Electric vehicle technologies.
