Course Goal / Objective

Deriving landscape-level information on environmental resources using various data collection and analysis methods that rely on information technologies such as Remote Sensing and GIS. Understanding landscape patterns and processes by employing landscape characterization and landscape-level change detection

Course Content

Scope of digital data collection and analysis in landscape analysis. Concepts of land use and land cover and relationships between these concepts and natural and anthropogenic forces in environment. Use of digital and analog data of varying types and scales in landscape analysis. Spatial analysis: requirements, advantages-disadvantages and limitations of analyses at local, regional and global scales. Keys to describe biophysical features of landscape-level environment: vegetation, built-up features, geomorphological and hydrological aspects. Categorical description: Classification schemes, FAO, CORINE Land Cover (CLC), Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP), etc. Land use and land cover mapping: traditional and contemporary approaches. Landscape pattern analyses: patch, class and landscape-level metrics. Computer-based lab work.
