Course Goal / Objective

To help student in developing an understanding of the religious and philosophical foundations of the relationship between religion and state in the history of the West and in the Islamic world -to equip students with an ability to analyze the contemporary policies of religion and state in various contexts by introducing them to general as well as critical approaches

Course Content

1 Introduction. Introduction of the topics and the course material 2 Basic concepts: religion, state, laicite etc 3 Historical development of religion and state relations in the West and Islam 4 Theories of religion and state in the Wets I: Calvin: Religious approach Lock: Liberal approach 5 Theories of religion and state in the West II: Montesquieu: Instrumental approach Gramsci: Critical approach 6 Decline of religion in the West: Renaissance and reform movements; Enlightenment and the effects of French revolution 7 A Qur’anic understanding of state? The policies of the Prophet of Islam 8 Basic concepts within the context of religion and state in Islam I 9 Basic concepts within the context of religion and state in Islam II 10 Al- ahkam al-Sulatiyyah tradition within the tradition of Middle ages:, Maverdi, Gazali and İbn Cemaa 11 İbn Teymiyyah and İbn Khaldun’un and their views on religion and state 12 Models of religion and state relations in the contemporary societies 13 Islam and laic systems and search for democracy debates 14 A comparison between the West and the East regarding religion and state relations

Course Precondition

The student, who understands the relationship between religion and politics in a multidimensional way, interprets current problems and discussions more easily.
