Course Goal / Objective

Students have the knowledge about the structure of kalam and philosophy, the two of main currents of Islamic thought, and the relationship between these two disciplines; have ability to present original comments oh these topics.

Course Content

1 Common issues of kalam and philosophy. 2 Introduction to the literature of the theological refutations of the philosophy. 3 Asharite refutation ot the philosophy. 4 Gazzali and his Tahafut al-Falasifa. 5 Shahrastani and his Musaraat al-Falasifa. 6 Mutazilite refutation of the philosophy. 7 Ibn al-Malahimi and his Tuhfat al-Mutakallimin. 8 The refutation of the philosophy in Ottoman kalam thought. 9 Ottoman Tahafut literature. 10 The critique of philosophy’s view of God. 11 The critique of philosophy’s cosmology. 12 The critique of philosophy’s view of prophethood. 13 The critique of philosophy’s view of eschatology. 14 The critique of philosophy’s view of soul (nafs).
