Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to discuss the current concepts, theories, and approaches related to creative and cultural industries based on the definitions and sector classifications provided by various institutions and organizations such as the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCSM), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Social Security Institution (SGK), and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), as well as to conduct authentic research in the field.
Course Content
The paradigm shift from the concept of the culture industry to creative and cultural industries is critically examined. Concepts such as creative labor, digital labor, precarization, and creative cities are analyzed with a critical perspective. The course also utilizes reports, documents, statistics, and data from national and international institutions that produce content and policies on creative and cultural industries. The history, policies, and practices of creative and cultural industries in different countries, including Turkey, are examined. The course covers Turkey’s cultural policies and includes interviews with actors in the sector regarding labor processes in creative and cultural industries. These interviews are presented during the course. In addition to fundamental concepts, theories, and knowledge frameworks, practical insights into the workings of the sector are also developed.
