Course Goal / Objective
1/3 of the insect species identified to date are dependent on living plant tissues and, despite complex control measures, consume about 10% of annual plant production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems. Plants are generally quite well protected against insect attack, making most insects highly specialized feeders as a result. The mechanisms underlying plant resistance to invasive herbivores on the one hand, and specialization (specialization) in the feeding behavior of insects, on the other hand, are the main topics of this course. For insects, these include endocrinological features of host plant phenology and insect life-cycle synchronization, with implications for food-plant selection and related complex sensory processes, learning and feeding physiology. Plants attacked by insects not only activate defense systems to minimize damage to them, but also emit chemical signals that can be created by neighboring plants that can attract the natural enemies of these invading insects and perhaps establish their defense systems. Within the scope of this course, plant-insect relations will be discussed and especially resistance mechanisms will be emphasized.
