Course Goal / Objective

Design and development of orthopedic devices, soft tissue and dental implants by learning the standards used in the design, production and testing of implants used in the medical industry.

Course Content

Introduction to medical devices; Medical devices definition, Introduction to design, Tissue engineering, Biomaterials for devices, Materials wear and corrosion. The solution of clinical problems by use of implants and other medical devices design. The role of stress/strain analysis in the design process. Biomaterials and selection of biomaterials. Guidelines for surgical implantation procedures. Standards used in the design, manufacture and testing of biomechanical devices. Design and development of orthopedic devices, soft tissue implants, and dental implants. Case studies in medical engineering; Internal bone fracture-fixation plates, Human spinal vertebral body.
