Course Goal / Objective

The course aims to examine the internal structure of steel, to understand the iron-carbon balance and TTT diagrams, and to choose the right process by teaching the details of heat treatments.

LO02 The student examines the iron-carbon diagram, explains phase transformations, and effectively utilizes the diagram in material selection.
LO03 The student classifies steels and non-ferrous metals, compares their properties, and determines suitable application areas.
LO04 The student explains different types of heat treatments, determines when to apply each, and evaluates their effects on material properties.
LO05 The student analyzes TTT diagrams, explains phase transformations, and applies these diagrams in heat treatment processes.
LO06 The student evaluates the effects of atomic structure changes on mechanical and physical properties of materials.
LO07 The student performs hardening by quenching, measures material hardness distribution using the Jominy curve, and interprets the results.
LO08 The student identifies critical temperatures in the iron-carbon diagram and interprets the relationship between phase transformations and temperature.
LO09 The student identifies processing temperatures, holding times, and cooling rates in heating and cooling processes; analyzes their effects on the internal structure of materials (austenite, ferrite, pearlite, martensite, bainite, etc.) and mechanical properties, and applies appropriate heat treatment procedures.
