Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to examine editing techniques within the broader context of film language and cinematic expression, enabling students to analyze editing processes through narrative, aesthetic, and ideological dimensions. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between parts and the whole, critically engage with the interplay of sound and image, and explore how different editing strategies impact cinematic storytelling. By exploring key paradigms in the history of film editing, the course encourages students to assess the historical evolution of editing practices and their theoretical foundations. Ultimately, students will be able to recognize editing not merely as a technical tool, but as a fundamental component in shaping cinematic meaning and artistic expression.
Course Content
This course examines the evolution of editing techniques from the early days of cinema to contemporary filmmaking. Focusing on the narrative, aesthetic, and formal functions of editing, it explores various historical approaches to montage and continuity. Classical narrative editing, Soviet montage theories, experimental cinema practices, and contemporary digital editing techniques are analyzed through a comparative perspective. Students will engage in analytical discussions on how editing structures impact narrative construction, evaluate the aesthetic and ideological implications of editing choices, and examine key historical turning points in the development of editing practices through case studies. The course emphasizes that editing is not merely a technical process but a fundamental aspect of cinematic meaning-making, positioning editing techniques within the broader evolution of film language.
