Course Goal / Objective

This course introduces higher layer communication protocols used on the Internet. The outline includes a detailed study of the TCP/IP suite, covering various protocols for the application layer, including routing protocols, distributed network management protocols, web protocols, instant messaging and presence protocols, IoT protocols, peer-to-peer file sharing protocols, remote desktop sharing protocols, and security protocols.

Course Content

Transport protocols: TCP, UDP, SCTP. Routing protocols: RIP, OSPF, BGP. Distributed management protocols: RPC, LDAP, SNMP. Web protocols: HTTP, FTP, DNS. E-Mail protocols: POP3, IMAP, SMTP. Voice over IP: SIP, H.323, RTP, RTCP. Instant Messaging and Presence Protocols: XMPP, OSCAR, MSNP. Internet of Things: CoAP, CoCoA. Peer-to-peer file sharing protocols: Bittorrent, eDonkey, LimeWire. Remote desktop sharing protocols: RDP, VNC, TeamViewer. Security protocols: Secure e-payment and AAA protocols. Version control protocols: GIT, SVN.
