Course Goal / Objective
The primary objectives of this course are: a) To teach the basic properties of irrigation schemes and its components, b) to figure out advantages and disadvantages of irrigation schemes management techniques with examples, c) to provide students with basic inpormation on irrigation and drainage schemes.
Course Content
Soil and water resources potential of Turkey, irrigated agriculture in Turkey and total irrigated areas by years. The factors that should be considered in developing water resources for irrigation purposes. Soil classification for irrigated agriculture (SAT) and its relations with irrigation systems. Crop rotation systems; determination of cropping pattern in irrigation schemes. Irrigation associations in Turkey. Irrigation schemes, irrigation and conveyance efficiencies, and canal capacity determination. Planned water distribution, the importance of measured and checked irrigation, and problems emerged. The farmer irrigator-group studies. Maintenance and operation (M and O) organization in the irrigation schemes operated by State Hydraulic Works (DSI), stages of turnover of M and O responsibilities to Farmer Irrigator Associations (FIA) or Water User Associations (WUA). Irrigation water pricing, principles of preparing irrigation fee tariffs. Ground-water investigation in the areas of irrigation schemes. Monitoring and evaluation of irrigation schemes. Large scale irrigation schemes in Turkey: Introducing Lower Seyhan Plain (ASO) and Southeastern Anatolia (GAP) Irrigation Projects, and problems regarding M and O activities.
