Course Goal / Objective

This course aims to teach students the effects of drugs on the nervous system, behavioral testing methods, and pharmacological models of psychiatric disorders.

Course Content

Behavioral pharmacology – Introduction, ethical principles and animal welfare, Neurobiological basis of behavior, effects of drugs on behavior (antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, stimulants, other drugs (neuroleptics, hypnotics, analgesics, etc.))., Behavioral tests and their principles, Motor function tests (Open field test, rotarod test, high jump test, etc.), Learning and memory tests (Maze tests (Y-maze, T-maze, Morris water maze), avoidance tests, recognition tests, etc.), Anxiety and depression tests (Elevated plus maze, dark/light preference test, forced swim test, tail suspension test, etc.), Social behavior tests (Social interaction test, dominance test, etc.), Other behavioral tests (Models of drug dependence, pain models, etc.), Introduction to pharmacological models of psychiatric disorders (Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and addiction). models), Depression models (Forced swim test, tail suspension test, chronic mild stress model, etc.), Anxiety models (Elevated plus maze, dark/light preference test, social interaction test, etc.), Schizophrenia models (Apomorphine-induced stereotypy, PCP-induced behaviors, etc.), Bipolar disorder models (Manic behavior models, depressive behavior models, etc.), Addiction models (Self-administration drug models, conditioned place preference models, etc.)
