Course Goal / Objective
In crop production, the use of pesticides (agricultural chemicals) to combat diseases and harmful agents is often an unavoidable necessity for quality and efficient production. If pesticides are not used in agricultural products, crop losses can reach nearly 50%. On the other hand, pesticides have some risks associated with their use. These are toxic substances that pose dangers and risks to human, animal, and environmental health. Pesticide manufacturing workplaces contain chemicals, flammable, explosive, and toxic substances, which create significant risks in terms of occupational health and safety. Above all, these toxic substances, if proper precautions are not taken, can have harmful effects on humans (such as poisoning, infertility, carcinogenic effects, and even death), and they also create serious threats to environmental health and safety (for example, pollution of food, soil, and water, and adverse effects on wildlife). The aim of the course is to explain the risk factors and preventive measures regarding occupational health and safety in pesticide applications and pesticide manufacturing facilities to prevent these negative outcomes.
Course Content
In this course, the general properties of pesticides, their usage, storage, effects on human and environmental health, safety precautions to be taken when applying pesticides, personal protective equipment and their usage principles, inspection principles at pesticide sales outlets, and also the risks and preventive measures related to occupational health and safety in pesticide manufacturing facilities will be discussed.
