Course Goal / Objective
In plant production, the use of pesticides is often an inevitable situation in order to ensure quality and efficient production against diseases and harmful agents. If pesticides (agricultural chemicals) are not used in agricultural products, crop losses can be nearly 50%. On the other hand, pesticides have certain risks. Agricultural chemicals are toxic substances, and they pose dangers and risks to human, animal, and environmental health. In workplaces where pesticides are produced, chemicals that are flammable, explosive, and toxic are present, creating serious risks in terms of occupational health and safety. Above all, these toxic substances can have various negative effects on humans (such as poisoning, infertility, carcinogenic effects, and death) if necessary precautions are not taken, and they also pose serious threats to environmental health and safety (such as the contamination of food, soil, and water, and the negative impact on wildlife). The purpose of this course is to explain the risk factors and preventive measures for occupational health and safety, both in pesticide applications and pesticide manufacturing, to prevent these negative consequences.
Course Content
In this course, the following topics will be covered: the general properties of pesticides, their usage, storage, the effects of pesticides on human and environmental health, safety precautions to be taken when applying pesticides, personal protective equipment and its usage principles, inspection principles in pesticide sales outlets, and also the risks and preventive measures related to occupational health and safety in pesticide manufacturing facilities.
