Course Goal / Objective

To teach music and rhythm at the graduate level in the field of Turkish folk dances through practical examples.

Course Content

In this course, the musical structure of Turkish folk dances will be examined in the context of regional diversity. The melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Turkish folk dance music will be analyzed. In this context, dance music related to the research and staging process will be discussed in the context of current paradigms.

LO01 This study explains the regional diversity of music accompanying folk dances in Turkey within the framework of geographical, cultural, and ethnomusicological approaches.
LO02 This study analyzes the music used in Turkish folk dances in terms of rhythm (usûl), tempo, and character traits.
LO03 It identifies, distinguishes, and practically performs the basic and irregular rhythmic structures used in the music accompanying folk dances.
LO04 It analyzes the melodic structure, scale/mode concept, and formal characteristics of folk dance music from different regions.
