Course Goal / Objective
The practices frequently used by nurses in pediatric intensive care units directly affect the length of stay, morbidity, and mortality rates in the ICU. The aim of this course is to enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for pediatric ICU patients in terms of holistic assessment, monitoring of vital signs, advanced life support applications, mechanical ventilation management, nutritional support, medication administration, and prevention of complications. Furthermore, it aims to develop students' competence in providing ethical, safe, and evidence-based care to critically ill children and their families.
Course Content
The importance of pediatric intensive care is increasingly recognized in our country and worldwide, and the quality of care provided in these units significantly affects patient outcomes. This course will cover: the structure and operation of pediatric intensive care units, team approach, patient safety, assessment of vital signs in children, advanced life support applications, mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive), respiratory support methods, fluid and electrolyte balance, enteral and parenteral nutrition, drug administration, infection control, blood and blood product transfusion, pain and sedation management, care of immobilized patients, management of diseases according to systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, etc.), and nursing care. Additionally, family-centered care, ethical approaches, and communication processes in pediatric intensive care will also be included in the course content.
