Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the basic concepts of aesthetics and art theories and to evaluate works of art not only from technical or formal perspectives, but also within intellectual and theoretical contexts. The course aims to develop students’ critical thinking skills regarding concepts such as art, beauty, taste, representation, expression, and interpretation. It also seeks to help students relate aesthetic thought to their own artistic practices, performance processes, and interpretive approaches.
Course Content
This course examines the fundamental concepts of aesthetic thought, the nature of art, and the meaning of the artwork within a historical and theoretical framework. Concepts such as beauty, art, taste, the sublime, representation, form, content, expression, imitation, creativity, and interpretation are discussed in their philosophical and artistic contexts. The development of aesthetic thought from Antiquity to the present is evaluated through thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Croce, Benjamin, Adorno, and contemporary theorists of art. The course also explores the relationship between art and its social, cultural, and historical conditions. Through examples from various artistic disciplines, students analyze aesthetic judgment, art criticism, and the function of art.
