General Information

The English Language Teaching (ELT) Department offers both undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA and PhD) programs. The basic components of this program consist of ELT methodology, linguistics and literature as well as elective courses such as French and German. Through elective courses, students are provided with opportunities to pursue individual interests in various cultural and professional subjects. Thus, the objective of the program is to help students to achieve mastery of the English Language and thus provide them with the knowledge and practical skills for teaching English as a foreign language. The department also organizes practice teaching in selected schools of the Turkish Ministery of Education.

The English Language Teaching Department trains and educates prospective English teachers for institutions of elementary, secondary, and higher education. the program accepts high school graduates. students who prefer this program as a result of university placement exam take a proficiency exam. those who succeed enroll in freshman year. starting from freshman they take courses on language, methodology, literature, and pedagogy courses. they study both theoretical and practical aspects of the courses. In the senior year they also attend practicum where they teach sample lessons. most of the graduates of this program are recruited by the Ministery of Education.

Goals

Programin Amaci The English Language Teaching Department aims to educate the students with the contemporary knowledge, practical skills and attitudes required for English teachers.

Objectives

Programin Hedefi The main objective of the department is to educate students with relevant and up-to-date knowledge, training and pre-requisite skills to enable them to guide their students to cope with the challenges of the 21st century.

Specific Admission Requirements

Placement through a centralized national university placement examination (ÖSYS). Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) is responsible to place students according to their ÖSYS scores.

Qualification Awarded

The students who have successfully accomplished this program gain the bachelor´s degree of English Language Teaching.

Qualification Requirements of Graduation

To be successful in this program, students are required to successfully complete all the courses to meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum of GPA of 2.00/4.00.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates of this program are eligible to apply for admission to graduate studies in same field or related areas if they pass the evaluation process designated according to the regulations of "Çukurova University Graduate Education and Examination Committee", which includes ALES, general point of average, and the interview.

Internship

The students of this program do the internship in the schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education for a year.

Applied Course

The teacher candidates are provided with this excellent opportunity to utilize and consolidate their knowledge in authentic teaching contexts through conducting teacher research and practising the theory they have learnt at the university

Work Placement

Teacher candidates may not learn effectively about teaching until they are really teaching in a classroom. Real-world classroom experience is considered crucial to put future teachers' tacit knowledge into practice and advance their teaching knowledge. The teaching experince program gives prospective teachers useful practical teaching experience in real classrooms.

Employment Opportunities

English Language Teaching Program graduates can work as English Teachers in private or state-run educational institutions, as instructors at Schools of Foreign Languages at universities, or those who prefer academic life can continue to study master's or PhD at university. In addition, they can work at global trading agents and companies
