General Information

Cukurova University, Faculty of Sports Sciences was established under the CU Rectorate by the decree of the Council of Ministers No. 97/9414 published in Official Gazette No. 23015 on 10.06.1987. Soon after this date, The School has located and organized administratively on the empty first floor of the Faculty of Aquaculture in the Campus. The Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching has opened by the Council of Higher Education decision No. 13209 on 16.07.1987. Initially, The Department of Physical Education and Sports establishing under the Faculty of Education in the 1986-1987 academic year and the same year, have been started education with 15 students. Following the changing conditions of the day, the Department transformed to the School of Physical Education and Sports in 1994-1995 academic year and then to the Faculty of Sports Sciences with the Presidental Decree No. 2504 on 09.05.2020. The Department of Coaching Education initially has started education and training within the School of Physical Education and Sports in the 1994-1995 academic year with 30 students selected by special talent examination. Today, the Department of Coaching Education being active within the Faculty of Sports Sciences, is educating coaches in nine main sports branches involving football, basketball, handball, volleyball, wrestling, ping-pong (table tennis), tennis, artistic gymnastics, track and field.

Feature & Definition

Students of the Department can graduate from the Faculty and receive the "Coach" title after complete the four years of education. During their education, the students must complete theoretical and practical courses which are at least 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) and also do the club internship one in four semesters. The academic program of the Department has reorganized by moving to the core curriculum to ensure the uncovering of creativity and the development of skills in the 2020-2021 academic year, by the decision of the Higher Education Council (YÖK). The academic staff of the Department consists of fourteen academic personnel involving one professor, two associate professors, one assistant professor, eight lecturers, and two research assistants. In the Department of Coaching Education, coaches are educating in nine sports branches involving football, basketball, handball, volleyball, wrestling, ping-pong (table tennis), tennis, artistic gymnastics, track and field. Since the 2012-2013 academic year, the number of students has been increased from 50 to 70. In 2020-2021, the number of students has been reduced back to 50 by the decision of the Higher Education Council. 15% of the quota of the Department consists of national athletes and 10% of disabled athletes. The Department allows students to do a double major and sub-branch. In addition, the Department accepts students through exchange programs such as Erasmus (Hungary, Germany, Spain, and Poland), Mevlana, and Farabi. The international students are accepted only between the second and sixth semesters.

Goals

Education/training and opportunities are offered to educate coaches who know the structure and function of organisms in all branches of sport and in the activities related to human movements, who are competent in adapting the biological and psychological stress of exercises, who can monitor and evaluate the psycho-social impact of sports on society and the individual, and who have knowledge about structure and functioning of sports organization in our department. Opportunities are also provided to train coaches who have to acquire the principles, strategies, and tactics of youth teams and performance, who have gained team spirit, improved representation ability, experience, and self-confidence, who have acquired sporting skills and abilities that can make their professional profession in the best way, maintain their lives in a healthy, social way. In addition, coaches are trained who are open to development and change, sensitive to environmental, regional, and global issues, can provide education according to the individual characteristics of children, young people, and young adults, respectful democratic and ethical values, and advancing in the light of scientific knowledge.

Objectives

In accordance with the vision and mission of the Faculty, it aims to educate generations who are always aware of responsibilities, sensitive to national and global issues, defending the indivisible integrity of their country, pacifist, productive and consistent. The Coaching Training program, it is aimed to train coaches who can be sensitive to social problems and needs, able to provide an updated teaching service by these needs, can develop projects and community service practices for these problems and needs, have adopted the ethical values of the profession, can be a role model for the society in line with these principles.

Specific Admission Requirements

To be accepted into the program, students must submit the results of the Student selection exam and the exam score given by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM). In addition to the Student selection exam, a special aptitude exam is held to be accepted into the program.

Access to Further Studies

Students who successfully completed their undergraduate education from this program can attend higher education programs in their study fields or related fields on condition that receive the passing grade on the Academic Personnel and Post Graduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) and have a sufficient level of English language knowledge within the frame of “C.U. Regulation of Graduate Education and Training”.

Internship

The students of the Coaching Education Department make practices about their sports branches with courses “Course of Coaching Experience” and “Course of Coaching Practices”. These courses are starting from the third semester and continues until graduation.

Applied Course

In the Department of Coaching Education; A wide variety of applied courses are given as practical courses for all other sports branches in relation to the practical courses in Football, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball, Wrestling, Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics and Instrument Gymnastics, Canoeing and Rowing.

Work Placement

Students studying in the coaching training program can improve their learning by applying the basic knowledge they have learned in school, especially in a C.U. Sports Club (basketball, volleyball, table tennis, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, canoeing, rowing, and other water sports), and other sports clubs.

Double Major, Additional Major & Exchange Possibilities

Undergraduate student transfers between associated and undergraduate programs at Cukurova University are made on the basis of paragraph (e) of the first paragraph of Article 7 of the Higher Education Law No. 2547 and article of law published in the Official Gazette No. 27561 dated 24/04/2010. In this context, the undergraduate transfers are made by ensuring the criteria and prerequisites specified in the scope of the "Directive on the Principles of Undergraduate Student Transfer Between Associate and Undergraduate Programs of Çukurova University". According to the Directive on the Principles of Undergraduate Student Transfer Between Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Programs of Çukurova University, students can benefit from common program opportunities.

Employment Opportunities

The Department of Coaching Education trains sports educators who are in great need of our country in the field of sports. Alumni of the Department work as a coach and assistant coach in professional and amateur sports clubs, in the central and provincial organizations of the General Directorate of Youth and Sports, and schools affiliated to the Ministry of Education. Moreover, graduates take responsibility for teaching sporting events and sports organizations in various fields such as private sports centers and tourism.
