Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to teach microorganisms which is the subject of public health and environmental technology, to introduce microorganisms and their life cycles, to provide an understanding of biological processes in which microorganisms are participating, to describe the usage of them in producing goods and services, to describe their roles in wastewater treatment processes, to teach how to biodegradation studies can implemented,to teach mecanism of infection and contamination.

Course Content

Microbial pollution of water, changes of the natural qualities of water, growth conditions in natural populations, micro-organisms and their habitats, the general methods of measurement of pollution, BOD kinetics, carbon cycle and kinetics of substrat limiting bacterial growth, endogenous metabolism, microbial growth and practice of and usage of substrate removal mechanisms in biological treatment, basıc microbiology activated sludge processes, indicator microorganisms, bulking problem, coliform bacteria and the importance of coliforms in environmental engineering, analysis methods of coliforms, nitrogen cycle, and the role of microorganisms in nitrogen cycle, nitrification and denitrification microbiology, biological N removal in wastewater plants, biological , phosphorus cycle and microbiology, principles of biological phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment plants, sulfur cycle and microbiology, sulfate-reducing bacteria related problems, the anaerobic treatment of wastewater and waste sludges, microbiology and important factors, immobilized enzyme and cell technology, the enzyme sources and the production of enzymes, pathogens in water in the soil and air, mechanism of infection, interactions between artificial ingredients and mikroorganisms.
