Course Goal / Objective

To give information about the physical and chemical properties of Boron and Silicon element, important compounds of both elements and their applications in the industrial area and to examine their technologies. Boron and its compounds, Silicon chemistry, Silicon compounds (Silicon-Oxygen) (Silicon-Hydrogen) (Silicon-Halogen), Properties and preparation of sols, Silicate acids.

Course Content

Introduction to boron and silicon chemistry and importance of these elements, Boron and Compounds, Elemental boron, Inorganic borates, Boric acid, borax, sodium perborate, refractory boron compounds, Boron-nitrogen compounds, boron-halides, boron-alkyl compounds, boron-aryl compounds , Boron-oxygen derivatives, the place and importance of Boron and its compounds in the literature, New synthesized boron compounds and their synthesis mechanisms and characterizations (Literature studies), Silicon-Hydrogen compounds, Silicon-Halogen compounds, Water glass, Silicides, Silicone polymers; Silicate cements: Magnesium silicates, Glass; Silica bricks; Silicon carbide; Perlite; bentonite; Properties and preparation of kaolin, silicon nitride, clays, sols (amorphous silica gel, fine silica powders); Silicate acid; Soluble silicates; Crystalline alkali and metal silicates, Homework and presentations
