Course Goal / Objective
The aims this course are to teach classical and somatic hybridization techniques in citrus; citrus flower biology, breeding strategy and aspects of hybridization breeding; important factors affecting the success of breeding; structure of the cell wall; protoplast isolation techniques (mechanical and chemical); explant resources, washing solutions used in enzymatic isolation; enzymes and their mixtures, washing and purifying the protoplast; determining the size and efficiency of protoplast; protoplast fusion methods (chemical, mechanical and electro-fusion); protoplast fusion and culturing the fused cells.
Course Content
The main objectives of this course are classical and somatic hybridization techniques in citrus; citrus flower biology, breeding strategy and aspects of hybridization breeding; important factors affecting the success of breeding; possible usage of somatic hybridization in regards to scion and rootstock breeding, hybridization breeding process, solutions for the problems in hybridization breeding.
