Course Goal / Objective

At the end of this course, students; 1) Applying mathematics, science and engineering knowledge to the analysis and design of machine elements. 2) Gaining information about how to select optimum machine elements for design 3) Learning the design principles of machine elements 4) To gain the ability to use basic engineering knowledge for machine element design.

Course Content

Introduction to the definition and design of machine elements. Stress analysis, calculations of the safe operation of objects under elastic stresses. Three-dimensional stresses, principal stresses, contact stresses. Elastic stress and stress relationships. Elastic properties of materials. Material behavior under static and fatigue loads. Fatigue life, important fatigue examples from the past. Analysis of screws, pins, wedges and fasteners. Design of welded, brazed and adhesive connections. Couplings, Strength of springs under load. Chain and belt-pulley power transmission systems. Fits, tolerances and reliability.

LO04 Effectively uses technical drawing, computerized drawing, design and analysis programs as technical communication methods.
