Course Goal / Objective

This course provides knowledge, skills, and innovative mindset needed to design buildings that are both energy-efficient and capable of generating as much energy as they consume over a year. Through a comprehensive curriculum that integrates theoretical learning, hands-on applications, and case study analysis, students engage with concepts of sustainable architecture, advanced energy-saving technologies, renewable energy systems, and integrated design processes. The course encourages future architects to develop sustainable, healthy, and technologically advanced living spaces that contribute positively to the environment and society, aligning with global sustainability goals and addressing the pressing need for climate action in the built environment.

Course Content

The building sector is the single largest consumer of energy and producer of greenhouse gas emissions. So, the reduction of building energy consumption is an important step in the move towards a sustainable economy. The Achieving Zero-Energy concept provides a cost-effective approach to achieve advanced levels of energy savings. This course is about how to re-design the existing building into net zero-energy by employing the five-step approach of: research, reduce, reuse, produce, and integrate to make the building sustainable. During the course, an overview of the possible energy measures with several case studies of zero-energy buildings around the building is provided to learn which measures are the most suitable for the conventional building at a low level of energy efficiency according to the local climate conditions and how to design a zero-energy concept for the building by using the mentioned stepped approach considering both passive and active measures.
