Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to develop students' ability to analyze the impact of grammatical structures and context in the translation process. The course also aims to enable them to recognize the similarities and differences between the two languages and to increase their competence in applying translation approaches to different text types.

Course Content

Different types of texts will be translated from English to Turkish and from Turkish to English. These text types will include literary, technical, academic, commercial and colloquial texts. The grammatical structures used in the texts will be examined and the effects of grammatical differences between the two languages on the translation process will be analyzed. Translation strategies will be applied by emphasizing cultural and contextual differences. Basic approaches used in translation processes (e.g. word-oriented, meaning-oriented translation) will be introduced and practical applications will be made.

Sample texts for comparing grammatical differences: Examples of simple, complex and compound sentence structures. Short texts containing cultural elements (e.g. idioms, proverbs) and their analysis with different translation approaches.
