Course Goal / Objective

This course aims to discuss the new media ecosystem within social, political, cultural, and economic contexts and to examine the new research methods and techniques preferred in scientific studies in the field of new media through conducting authentic new media research.

Course Content

Developments in internet technologies are examined through global reports. New business models in the new media industry, transmedia storytelling, and digital game studies are discussed through examples. Concepts such as algorithmic surveillance, participatory culture, big data, platform capitalism, and digital labor, as well as political economy approaches to new media, are analyzed through the works of theorists in the field of new media and relevant films and TV series. Text-based analysis of web content and research methods such as netnography are examined through scientific studies and applied through the development of research designs. The course also critically discusses artificial intelligence tools and applications, as well as AI ethics.
