Course Goal / Objective

The goal of this course is to introduce networking concepts related to the management of local area networks. The course includes topics related to repair, setup, management, and maintenance of local area networks.

Course Content

Service level agreements (SLAs). IT infrastructure library (ITIL) and configuration management databases. Management tools and architectures. Fundamental management concepts. Abstract Syntax Notation 1 (ASN.1). Simple Management Network Protocol (SNMP). Management Information Base (MIB). Remote Monitoring MIB. Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Web services-based network management: SOAP/REST. XML and Structure Definitions (DTD and XML Schema). Overview of QoS parameters. Available bandwidth estimation: Probe Rate Model and Probe Gap Model. Capacity Estimation: Packet Pairs/Trains and Pathchar. Achievable throughput and goodput measurements: benchmarking techniques. RTT, OWD and Jitter measurements: techniques and implementation aspects.
