Course Goal / Objective

The Hittites, who lived in Anatolia during the 2nd millennium BCE, communicated by writing letters on various matters to regions such as Mesopotamia or Egypt, as well as to their vassal kingdoms. The course focuses on inter-state correspondence in Anatolia during the Hittite period, with reference to the historical development of the tradition of letter writing in the ancient world.

Course Content

The Hittite letters with international content were sent to the great kingdoms. The language of international correspondence was Akkadian, while Hittite was rarely used. In addition, there are letters written in Hittite sent from or to vassal kings or officials in regions other than the royal court. Besides these, there are also letters exchanged between officials, which are among the Hittite cuneiform documents. The content of the course consists of letters of various types as listed above.
