Course Goal / Objective
Hittite state treaties generally belong to the period of the Great Empire, during which political events were particularly intense. These treaties are among the most important historical documents, as they reflect the political relations of the Hittite state. The state treaties can be divided into two categories: paritetic treaties (based on the principle of equality) made between the Hittite kings and other rulers of equal status, and treaties made with their vassals. The aim of the course is to examine the treaty texts concluded by the Hittites with other states.
Course Content
The course focuses on the analysis of treaties made by the Hittites both internally and with foreign states (in the Ancient Near East), aiming to reveal the political and cultural structures of Anatolia and Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium BCE through the study of these treaty texts.
