Course Goal / Objective
To learn the structural elements of the extracellular matrix in detail. To understand the functional roles of matrix-cellular proteins and the basal membrane. To grasp the mechanisms of extracellular matrix remodeling and the functionality of these processes. To learn how matrix-modifying enzymes are regulated and function. To analyze critical pathological processes involving the extracellular matrix. To learn about the use of extracellular modifications in creating three-dimensional disease models. To learn the methods used in extracellular matrix studies.
Course Content
Introduction to the extracellular matrix, structure and function of collagen and elastin, adhesive glycoproteins, matrix proteoglycans, basement membrane, extracellular matrix remodeling and recycle, matrix metalloproteinases; inhibitors, activators and signaling, wound healing and the extracellular matrix, fibrosis and the extracellular matrix, tumor invasion and metastasis. Investigation of three-dimensional disease models created with extracellular matrix modifications, methods used in extracellular matrix studies.
