Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to develop a thorough understanding of the theoretical foundations of participatory design at the levels of research epistemology and methodology, through a systematic examination of the field from the perspectives of critical spatial theory, deliberative democratic theory, and social movement studies. Within this framework, the course seeks to enable doctoral students to critically interrogate the epistemological and ontological underpinnings of qualitative research paradigms — including participatory action research (PAR), co-design, and socio-spatial mapping; to analyze power relations and questions of representation from an ethical standpoint; and to translate this accumulated theoretical knowledge into independent, original, and publication-ready academic contributions by situating it in relation to distinctive research problems within architectural contexts.

Course Content

This course covers the political history and theoretical frameworks of participation in architecture, spatial justice and identity politics, participatory action research (PAR), co-design workshops, socio-spatial mapping, fieldwork implementation, qualitative data analysis, design transfer, AI-assisted participation tools and data ethics, global perspectives, and academic writing for publication.

Course Precondition

No prerequisites are required for the course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 Participatory action research (PAR) discusses the epistemological foundations and limitations of co-design and socio-spatial mapping methods.
LO02 It analyzes the power dynamics and ethical dimensions of the participatory process within the selected urban or architectural context.
LO03 It evaluates the ability of AI-powered engagement tools to represent the voice of the community and their data ethics considerations.
LO04 Designs a participant protocol appropriate for the research question.
LO05 Organizes a co-design workshop with a real community.
LO06 He organizes the qualitative data obtained from the fieldwork into a transfer matrix that incorporates the findings into the architectural program.
LO07 He or she provides a written justification for decisions made regarding ethical dilemmas encountered during fieldwork.
LO08 He prepares research findings in two different formats: an academic article and a community presentation.
