Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to enable students to recognize indoor plants, gain knowledge about major plant groups and their characteristics, and select and use plants appropriately in line with aesthetic, functional, and sustainable design principles. It also aims to equip students with the ability to analyze indoor environmental conditions, identify suitable plant species, apply plant care and management practices, and evaluate plants as an integral part of holistic interior design.
Course Content
The course examines the definition, historical development, and role of indoor plants in design, focusing on major plant groups and analyzing important families, genera, and species in terms of their morphological and decorative characteristics. The aesthetic, functional, and psychological contributions of plants are evaluated within the framework of biophilic design. Environmental factors affecting indoor conditions—such as light, temperature, humidity, air circulation, and soil properties—are analyzed, and criteria for selecting appropriate plant species are explained accordingly. Various usage techniques, including potted plants, vertical gardens, terrariums, and hydroponic systems, are introduced, along with maintenance practices such as irrigation, fertilization, pruning, propagation, and pest and disease management. Additionally, sustainable design approaches, low-maintenance plant species, and current applications in interior planting are addressed through the development of sample arrangements and maintenance plans.
Course Precondition
There are no prerequisites.
