Course Goal / Objective
(The aim of this course is to identify the risks that children in early childhood may encounter at home, at school, in playgrounds, and in digital environments; to teach preventive practices aimed at ensuring children's physical, emotional, and psychosocial safety; and to train prospective teachers who are able to create safe learning environments, recognize neglect and abuse, and respond appropriately in crisis situations.
Course Content
This course covers the identification of risks that children in early childhood may encounter in physical, emotional, social, and digital environments, as well as the development of preventive approaches to address these risks. The concept of child safety forms the foundation of the course, alongside an examination of children’s rights, the right to protection, and the relevant legal framework. Children’s risk perception and behavioral characteristics across developmental stages are analyzed, with emphasis on appropriate safety measures for different age groups. In terms of physical safety, potential risks in home, school, and outdoor/play environments are addressed, along with accident prevention strategies and basic first aid awareness. In addition, the course explores safety practices in educational settings through case analyses, supporting students in conducting risk assessments and developing safety plans. Emotional and psychological safety is also a key component, focusing on secure attachment, supportive learning environments, and psychological first aid approaches. Issues related to child neglect and abuse are examined in detail, including the identification of warning signs, preventive mechanisms, and legal reporting procedures. In response to the needs of the digital age, the course also addresses screen use, risks in digital environments, and cyber safety. Finally, the course emphasizes the importance of family involvement, institutional policies, and school–family collaboration in fostering a safe school culture, aiming to develop a sustainable and holistic approach to child safety.
