Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand couple relationships in different sociocultural contexts (gender, culture, disadvantaged groups, etc.) and to apply couples therapy in a context-sensitive manner. The course also includes the following objectives: • Learning couples therapy theories • Developing skills in working with disadvantaged and diverse couples • Gaining cultural sensitivity and ethical awareness

Course Content

This course is generally structured around the following themes: • Introduction to couple and family therapy • Diversity and cultural sensitivity • Gender roles and relationships • Disadvantaged couples (immigrant, disabled, low socioeconomic status, etc.) • Couple therapy theories (systemic, emotionally focused, Gottman, etc.) • Communication and conflict in couples • Assessment and intervention techniques • Ethical and professional boundaries This content is consistent with the following topics included in existing graduate courses: • “couple therapy theories and practices” • “working with couples from different backgrounds” • “gender and disadvantaged groups”
