Course Goal / Objective

The aim of the course is to equip students with the conceptual, theoretical and methodological knowledge necessary to conduct research on folk dances.

Course Content

This course will examine Turkish folk dances from an anthropological perspective, within the context of specific theoretical and cultural variables. Culture, as a bio-cultural entity created by humans, will be evaluated in terms of its origin, nature, development process, and the distinctions within the context of folk culture. Accordingly, the emergence, transformation, construction, and representation processes of Turkish folk dances will be analyzed in relation to theories of performance, identity, authenticity, and staging. The course will also cover the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological approaches offered by the discipline of ethnochoreology. Thus, the aim is for students to be able to evaluate folk dances not only as a form of performance but also as a field of cultural representation and research.
