Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to examine the historical, epistemological, and ontological foundations of the social sciences through modern, post-positivist, and realist frameworks, providing an integrated understanding of the discipline’s conceptual evolution. It also seeks to enable students to develop a critical and normative perspective on the future of social science through engagements with postmodern critiques and debates on Islamic social sciences.

Course Content

The course systematically explores the major debates in the philosophy of social science, ranging from the Enlightenment and positivism to post-positivism, critical realism, and mechanism-based explanation. After assessing the epistemic crisis introduced by postmodernism, the course concludes with contemporary discussions on the possibility of Islamic social sciences and cross-civilizational knowledge production.
