Course Goal / Objective

To teach the fundamental principles of animation and the animation production process at a theoretical level, and to provide hands-on training in 2D animation using frame-based and tween-based techniques with Adobe Animate. By the end of the semester, students are expected to independently design and produce short animation projects of their own.

Course Content

Historical development and types of animation (2D, 3D, stop-motion, motion graphics), Disney's 12 principles of animation, storyboarding and key pose practice, the Adobe Animate interface and core tools, symbol types (graphic, button, movie clip), frame-by-frame animation, classic tween and motion tween techniques, shape tween, character animation with the bone tool (inverse kinematics), adding and synchronizing sound, fundamentals of interactive animation, and exporting animations as GIF, video, or HTML5.

Course Precondition

There is no formal prerequisite. However, it is recommended that students have completed Graphics and Animation I-II and are familiar with basic visual design and layer logic.

Resources

Lecture notes prepared by the instructor. Richard Williams — The Animator's Survival Kit, Faber & Faber. Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston — The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation, Disney Editions. Preston Blair — Cartoon Animation, Walter Foster. Adobe Creative Team — Adobe Animate Classroom in a Book, Adobe Press.
