Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to teach the use of comics as a visual communication tool by leveraging their narrative power, including skills in story creation and storytelling, as well as conveying messages through this medium. After providing the theoretical and practical foundations of comic production processes, the course will teach the stages of comic creation and drawing techniques, enabling students to produce comics in both digital and traditional media environments. It also aims to develop the ability to use comics as a tool for communication and persuasion, to effectively produce and direct comics toward target audiences in social and public communication processes, and to build skills in visual storytelling, message design, and content creation tailored to specific audiences.
Course Content
The following topics will be covered and delivered: the history and cultural significance of comics; visual communication theories; what comics are and their effectiveness as a communication tool; panels, framing, and composition; visual literacy and storytelling; narrative techniques; character design; character psychology and visual identity; dialogue and text creation and design; storyboarding and page layout; digital illustration techniques; the relationship between comics, media, and culture; communication theories and visual messaging; and the production of comics that convey social and public messages. Through individual and group practices, students will be taught how to design and manage comics as an effective communication tool.
