Course Goal / Objective

To comparatively analyze the economic and social causes and consequences of accelerating urbanization processes across the world within the framework of different theoretical approaches; to examine the relationship between spatial investments and economic crises; to reveal the role of spatial investments in processes of capital accumulation; and to discuss emerging approaches developed within this body of literature.

Course Content

This course examines the major theoretical approaches to urban economics, the historical development of urbanization processes, and the economic and social transformations emerging on a global scale. The course covers topics such as spatial organization, capital accumulation, urban rent, real estate and infrastructure investments, the spatial dimensions of economic crises, and neoliberal urbanization policies. In addition, the economic structure of cities is evaluated through critical and interdisciplinary approaches highlighted in the contemporary literature.
