Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to learn about the major zoonotic diseases transmissible from farm animals to humans, their routes of transmission, and their effects on human, animal, and environmental health; understand the One Health approach; assess zoonotic risks on farms; plan farm facilities in accordance with biosecurity principles; and explain fundamental biosecurity practices.

Course Content

Concepts of zoonoses and biosecurity; the One Health approach; bacterial, viral, and parasitic zoonoses; routes of transmission and risk groups; occupational protection; biosecurity-oriented farm planning; quarantine and isolation; cleaning and disinfection; feed and water safety; vector control; manure, waste, and carcass management; milking hygiene; outbreak management; and the preparation of farm biosecurity plans.

LO07 Conducts a basic zoonotic risk assessment and develops a biosecurity plan for a model farm.
