Course Goal / Objective

Plant diseases are an important factor limiting yield. Diseases can be controlled to some extent with cultural practices such as crop rotation, tillage methods and chemical applications. The most effective and simple method of controlling diseases and pests is to use disease-resistant varieties. There is a constant demand for plant varieties with disease resistance. The breeding process is always dynamic, as pathogen populations are constantly changing due to various factors. Varieties developed in terms of characteristics such as yield and quality may not carry disease and pest resistance. Therefore, resistance breeding in plants is an ongoing process. Significant advances have been made on the molecular basis of disease resistance in plants. Marker techniques and next-generation sequencing technologies are among these advances. These techniques help speed up the classical breeding methods and increase their effectiveness. Within the scope of this course, plant resistance mechanisms, the physiological and molecular use of these mechanisms in breeding and breeding methods are included. It will focus on the development and effective use of disease-resistant plants with basic and applied scientific approaches.

Course Content

Mechanism of resistance, types of resistance, tolerance, genetic source of resistance, plants response, horizontal and vertical resistance, physiological response, gene for gene hypothesis, genetic variability, gene pyramiding, genetic basis of resistance, host-pathogen interaction, breeding strategies for resistance, breeding method for disease resistance (bulk, pedigree, backcross), molecular and classical testing methods
